Camilo Andrés Vargas Gil debuted as a professional footballer on 11 March 2007 at the Estadio Metropolitano de Techo, appearing for Independiente Santa Fe during a victory against La Equidad. Since that start in Bogotá, the goalkeeper has evolved from a developing youth prospect into a foundational figure for both his domestic clubs and the Colombian national squad.
Early Career at Independiente Santa Fe
Vargas joined the youth ranks of Independiente Santa Fe at age 16. By 2009, he secured his first professional title with the 2009 Copa Colombia victory. He later gained prominence for his versatility beyond shot-stopping; on 23 November 2011, he scored a decisive last-minute winning goal against Millonarios during a derby. He was central to the team's 2012 Apertura championship, which broke a 36-year title drought. In 2014, his performance helped the club secure their eighth star, solidifying his status as a fan favorite before his departure in early 2015.

Upon joining Atlético Nacional in January 2015, Vargas faced stiff competition for the starting role against Franco Armani. Seeking consistent playing time, he moved to Argentinos Juniors on loan for the 2016-17 season. His career trajectory shifted following subsequent loan periods with Deportivo Cali, where his consistent displays led the club to sign him on a permanent contract in November 2018.
Success in Liga MX
Transferring to Atlas F.C. in July 2019, Vargas achieved sustained success in Mexico. He served as a key player in ending the club's 70-year title drought, contributing to victories in the 2021 Apertura and 2022 Clausura seasons. His individual accolades during this tenure included the Golden Glove, the Balón de Oro for the 2021-22 season, and two selections to the league's Best XI.
International Service
Vargas made his senior international debut for Colombia in 2014. After periods as an unused squad member, he earned his first tournament start during the 2021 Copa América third-place play-off against Peru. By the 2024 Copa América, he had secured his position as the primary starting goalkeeper, playing every match as the national team finished the tournament as runners-up.
