Elmer Earl "Butch" Hartman IV launched his career in animation after graduating from the California Institute of the Arts in 1987. Since then, he has built a multifaceted professional profile as a television producer, illustrator, voice actor, and screenwriter. His work remains defined by long-standing collaborations with major networks, particularly his twenty-year tenure producing original animated series for Nickelodeon.
Early Career and Education
Born in 1965 in Highland Park, Michigan, Hartman grew up in Roseville and New Baltimore, graduating from Anchor Bay High School in 1983. During his time at the California Institute of the Arts, he secured an internship on the Don Bluth film An American Tail. Following his 1987 graduation, he worked on various projects including the 1986–1987 My Little Pony, It's Punky Brewster, and Dink, the Little Dinosaur. He gained further experience as a member of the video reference crew for the Disney film Pocahontas and as an artist in the model department at Hanna-Barbera.

In the 1990s, Hartman contributed to various Cartoon Network productions, including Dexter's Laboratory, Johnny Bravo, and Cow and Chicken. He later transitioned to Nickelodeon, where his show The Fairly OddParents premiered in 2001 after originating as shorts on the Oh Yeah! Cartoons anthology. The program became the second-longest-running animated show on the network. He founded Billionfold Inc. in 2003 to facilitate the production of his subsequent shows, including Danny Phantom, T.U.F.F. Puppy, and Bunsen Is a Beast.
Subsequent Projects and Faith-Based Media
After departing Nickelodeon in February 2018, Hartman explored new digital ventures, including the short-lived Noog Network and the Speech Bubble podcast. He also released the book Mad Hustle in 2019, outlining strategies for pitching television content. Recent creative output has focused on faith-based media, notably the animated series The Garden, which debuted on the Pure Flix streaming service in 2023. This project expanded into a VBS curriculum and a children's Bible published by Thomas Nelson.
