Early Development and Feyenoord Career
Born in Barreiro, Portugal, in 1992, Martins Indi moved to the Netherlands with his family during infancy. After initial youth experience at the amateur club Spartaan '20, he joined the Feyenoord Academy at age 13. He debuted for the Feyenoord first team on 19 August 2010 in a Europa League match against Gent. Throughout his four seasons at De Kuip, he became a regular under manager Ronald Koeman, contributing to a second-place league finish in the 2011–12 season.

In July 2014, Martins Indi moved to the Portuguese club Porto for a fee of €7.7 million, where he remained for two seasons. He transitioned to England in 2016, joining Stoke City initially on loan. Following a successful campaign, he signed a permanent deal in 2017 for £7 million. His time at Stoke spanned relegation to the EFL Championship and included 137 total appearances before his departure in 2021.
Eredivisie Return and Recent Activity
Martins Indi returned to the Netherlands in 2020, joining AZ Alkmaar on loan before securing a permanent transfer in 2021. During his tenure at AZ, he made 45 appearances in the 2021–22 season and participated in the UEFA Europa Conference League. In July 2025, he signed a two-year contract with Sparta Rotterdam.
International Representation
Eligible for Portugal, the Netherlands, and Guinea-Bissau, Martins Indi chose to represent the Dutch national team. He debuted for the senior side against Belgium in August 2012. He was a member of the Netherlands squad that finished third at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, featuring in the group stage victory over Spain. His international career includes over 30 caps.
