Tapum! The Weapons' Story, a short film released in 1958, marked the debut of Bruno Bozzetto when he was twenty years old. Since then, the Italian animator and director has built a prolific career spanning satirical shorts, television series, and feature-length productions, consistently utilizing animation to comment on political and social themes across several decades.
Early Career and Feature Animation
Bozzetto moved into feature-length filmmaking with West and Soda in 1965, a parody style production, followed by the 1968 superhero parody The SuperVips. His 1976 feature Allegro non troppo presented a series of shorts set to classical music, offering a humorous and economical counterpoint to traditional animation styles. He later directed the 1987 live-action film Under the Chinese Restaurant.

The character Mr. Rossi, a hapless individual, became central to his body of work. Rossi starred in three feature films released between 1976 and 1978: Mr. Rossi Looks for Happiness, Mr. Rossi's Dreams, and Mr. Rossi's Vacation. During the 1980s, Bozzetto gained popularity across Europe for television series produced with Guido Manuli, including Stripy, Lilliput Put, and Mr. Hiccup.
Critical Acclaim and Digital Transition
His short film Grasshoppers received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Short Film in 1991. Bozzetto continued to produce shorts, including the 1996 entry Help? for the What a Cartoon! series and the 26-episode Spaghetti Family television series. By 1999, he began creating flash cartoons, most notably Europe and Italy, which explored socio-cultural differences and influenced the countryballs internet phenomenon.
