The political trajectory of Blaise Compaoré defined the landscape of Burkina Faso for twenty-seven years, beginning with his ascent to power in a 1987 coup d'état. Born in 1951, he transitioned from a military officer to the nation’s president, serving until his resignation during the 2014 uprising that forced his departure into exile in the Ivory Coast.
Military Origins and Rise
Born in 1951 in Ouagadougou, Compaoré joined the Upper Voltan Armed Forces in 1971. He attended the Yaoundé Military Academy in Cameroon, where he formed alliances with peers including Henri Zongo and Thomas Sankara. His early political influence grew through his participation in coups against Saye Zerbo and Jean-Baptiste Ouedraogo. By 1983, he was instrumental in the coup that established Sankara as president, serving subsequently as Minister of State and Minister of Justice.

Take the IQ test →Consolidation of Authority
On 15 October 1987, Compaoré led the coup d'état that resulted in the death of Thomas Sankara. He categorized his subsequent administration as a rectification of previous policies, moving away from the leftist framework of his predecessor. In 1989, he established the Organization for Popular Democracy – Labour Movement, which later evolved into the Congress for Democracy and Progress. His governance included limited democratic reforms and the adoption of a new constitution in 1991.
Governance and Foreign Policy
Throughout his tenure as president, Compaoré held several regional leadership roles, including chairperson of the Organisation of African Unity from 1998 to 1999 and chairperson of ECOWAS during two separate terms. His administration faced international scrutiny regarding allegations of arms trafficking to rebels in Sierra Leone and Angola. Domestically, he held presidential elections in 1991, 1998, 2005, and 2010, maintaining power until widespread protests against his attempt to modify constitutional term limits led to his resignation in 2014.
Legal Developments
Following his 2014 resignation and relocation to the Ivory Coast, legal proceedings regarding his past actions continued. In April 2022, he was convicted in absentia by a Burkinabé court for complicity in the murder of Thomas Sankara and sentenced to life imprisonment.
