Early Career and Education
Born in Kungsholmen, Stockholm, in 1935 to Karin and Josef Andersson, she began her training at the Terserus Drama School before attending the Royal Dramatic Theatre School between 1954 and 1956. Following her studies, she joined the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm, where she developed her craft alongside her sister, Gerd Andersson.

Between the 1950s and 1970s, Andersson appeared in ten motion pictures and three television films directed by Ingmar Bergman. Her work in the 1958 film Brink of Life earned her the Best Actress Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Other notable collaborations included roles in The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, The Magician, The Passion of Anna, and The Touch.
International Recognition
Her performance in the 1966 psychological thriller Persona, directed by Bergman, is cited as a defining moment of her career. That same year, she expanded into international productions, appearing in the Western Duel at Diablo with James Garner and Sidney Poitier. In 1963, she received the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlin International Film Festival for her role in Vilgot Sjöman's The Mistress.
Later Work and Humanitarian Projects
During the 1970s, she moved into American theatre and cinema, debuting on the American stage in 1973 with Full Circle and starring in the 1977 film I Never Promised You a Rose Garden. She worked with directors John Huston and Robert Altman and continued her theatrical career in Stockholm, directing plays at Dramaten in 1990. Additionally, she served as a supervisor for the Road to Sarajevo, a humanitarian initiative.
