Forbes immigrated to New York City in 1904. He initially secured a position at the Journal of Commerce, serving as both a writer and financial editor. His profile grew in 1911 when he began working as a syndicated columnist for the Hearst newspaper chain. Two years later, he advanced to the role of business and financial editor at the New York American, a position he held until 1916.
Founding and Legacy
The establishment of Forbes magazine in 1917 provided a platform for his focus on business leaders and economic success. Beyond his editorial duties, he founded the Investors League in 1942. Throughout his career, he authored nine books, including Men Who Are Making America and Automotive Giants of America. In his final years, he received editorial assistance from his sons, Bruce Charles Forbes and Malcolm Stevenson Forbes.
Death and Burial
Bertie Charles Forbes died on May 6, 1954, in New York City. His remains were eventually moved to his birthplace. In 1988, his body was returned to Scotland and interred in the Churchyard of Deer, located in New Deer, Aberdeenshire. This return to his roots followed a lifelong habit of returning to the region every two years during his time living abroad.
