Born in 1930, Bernard Charles Ecclestone transitioned from a post-war motorcycle parts trader to the architect of modern Formula One. Early Business and Racing
After leaving Dartford West Central Secondary School at 16, Ecclestone initially worked testing gas purity. Following World War II, he entered the motorcycle trade, co-founding the Compton & Ecclestone dealership. His competitive racing began in 1949 within the 500cc Formula 3 Series, where he utilized a Cooper Mk V. Although he attempted to enter the 1958 Monaco and British Grands Prix as a Formula One privateer, he failed to qualify for the main events.

Ecclestone shifted his focus toward driver management, representing Stuart Lewis-Evans and later Jochen Rindt, who secured a posthumous World Drivers' Championship in 1970. In 1972, he purchased the Brabham team for £100,000. He removed the team's customer car production focus to centralize resources on top-tier competition. Under his leadership and the designs of Gordon Murray, the team secured victories with drivers such as Carlos Reutemann, Carlos Pace, and Niki Lauda.
Commercial Expansion of Formula One
Ecclestone co-founded the Formula One Constructors' Association, leading it through the FISA–FOCA war. His control of the sport solidified following the 1987 Concorde Agreement, which formalized his authority over Grand Prix administration and logistics. He pioneered the sale of television rights, significantly increasing the financial scale of the sport. His corporate activities included founding International Sportsworld Communicators and co-owning the Queens Park Rangers football club from 2007 to 2011.
Recent Years and Legal Proceedings
Following the 2017 sale of the Formula One Group to Liberty Media, Ecclestone served as chairman emeritus until 2020. In October 2023, he faced proceedings at Southwark Crown Court where he was convicted of tax fraud. He received a 17-month suspended prison sentence and agreed to pay HM Revenue and Customs more than £650 million to settle outstanding taxes and penalties.
