Benson Farb

Benson Stanley Farb, born in Norristown in 1967, serves as a mathematician at the University of Chicago. He focuses his research on geometric group theory and low-dimensional topology, building a career defined by extensive academic mentorship and influential technical writing that bridges complex areas of mathematical study within the United States.

Academic Background

Farb completed his undergraduate studies at Cornell University before pursuing advanced graduate work. In 1994, he earned his doctorate from Princeton University. During his time there, he worked under the supervision of William Thurston, a significant influence on his approach to topological research.

Professional Contributions and Recognition

Based at the University of Chicago, Farb maintains an active role in the mathematical community. His service includes membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and he attained the status of Fellow of the American Mathematical Society in 2013. His expertise reached an international stage in 2014 when he delivered an invited talk on topology at the International Congress of Mathematicians held in Seoul. In 2024, his contributions to the field were formally acknowledged when he received the Leroy P. Steele Prize for Mathematical Exposition.

Pedagogy and Publishing

Beyond his individual research, Farb has played an active role in training the next generation of mathematicians, advising more than 40 doctoral students including Pallavi Dani, Kathryn Mann, Dan Margalit, Karin Melnick, and Andrew Putman. He has authored several technical texts, including 'Noncommutative Algebra' with R. Keith Dennis, published in 1993, and 'A Primer on Mapping Class Groups,' which he co-authored with Dan Margalit in 2012.
