Benjamin Sheares served as the second president of Singapore from 1971 until his death in 1981, holding the office for three terms. Medical Foundation
Educated at Saint Andrew's Secondary School and the King Edward VII College of Medicine, Sheares qualified as a physician in 1929. He specialized in obstetrics and gynaecology, eventually joining the staff at Kandang Kerbau Hospital and Singapore General Hospital. In 1950, he became a professor at the University of Malaya, marking the first time a local professional held such an academic rank in the field.

Known for his technical precision, Sheares standardized the lower Caesarian section procedure across Singapore. He also developed a method for creating an artificial vagina to treat birth defects like vaginal agenesis, a technique widely recognized as the Sheares operation. These advancements established his professional reputation before he entered the political sphere.
Wartime Service
During the Japanese occupation of Singapore, Sheares served as Deputy Medical Superintendent at the facility renamed Chuo Byoin. Tasked with overseeing local patients while the institution functioned as an emergency general hospital, he participated in mobile medical units that provided care to rural areas as part of the Japanese-led travelling dispensaries.
Presidency
Sworn in on 2 January 1971, Sheares presided over a period of significant development. He officially represented the state at international engagements, including the 1971 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting and the 1973 South East Asian Peninsular Games. He remained in office until his passing in 1981 and was later buried at the Kranji State Cemetery.
