Beatrix of the Netherlands

Born on 31 January 1938 at Soestdijk Palace in Baarn, Beatrix Wilhelmina Armgard reigned as the monarch of the Netherlands from 1980 until her abdication in 2013. Educated at Leiden University, where she earned a law degree in 1961, she became the heiress presumptive to the throne at age ten following her mother's 1948 accession.

Early Years and Wartime Exile

During World War II, the Dutch royal family evacuated to the United Kingdom in May 1940 before Beatrix moved to Ottawa, Canada. She resided at the Stornoway estate and attended Rockcliffe Park Public School. The family returned to the Netherlands in August 1945. She subsequently attended De Werkplaats school in Bilthoven before continuing her education at the Baarnsch Lyceum.

Academic and Public Life

Beatrix enrolled at Leiden University in 1956, studying sociology, economics, and law. After turning eighteen that same year, she joined the Council of State. Her academic career included lectures on international affairs and the cultures of Suriname and the Netherlands Antilles. In 1966, she married Claus von Amsberg, a German diplomat, amid public protests in Amsterdam regarding his background.

Reign and Constitutional Changes

Succeeding her mother, Queen Juliana, on 30 April 1980, Beatrix oversaw significant administrative shifts within the kingdom. Her reign included the secession of Aruba in 1986 and the 2010 dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles, which established Curaçao and Sint Maarten as constituent countries. She abdicated on 30 April 2013, passing the throne to her son, Willem-Alexander.
