Aviation Career
Trained at the Rangsdorf pilot school, Köstlin excelled in stunt flying and competed in international races in Belgium. During the late 1930s, she served as a test pilot for the Bücker aircraft company and a delivery pilot for Alfred Friedrich. Her flying skills extended to film work, where she performed stunts as a double for actors, including a simulated uncontrolled dive through a balloon barrier for the propaganda film Achtung! During World War II, Uhse served as a pilot for the Wehrmacht, where she flew various combat aircraft including the Junkers Ju 87 Stuka, Messerschmitt Bf 109, and the Messerschmitt Me 262. By October 1944, she held the rank of Hauptmann. In the final days of the war, she navigated a Siebel Fh 104 out of besieged Berlin, carrying her son and several passengers to safety in Leck.
Postwar Business Transition
Following the war, Allied restrictions prohibited her from flying, forcing a career pivot. While navigating the postwar black market, she identified a widespread need for information on sexual hygiene and contraception among women. She published 'Schrift X' in 1947, a brochure detailing the Knaus-Ogino rhythm method. This initiative expanded into a mail-order company, Betu, providing products and education that laid the foundation for the retail sex industry.
Commercial Legacy
Her business efforts culminated in the establishment of Beate Uhse AG, which became a publicly listed company on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. For her contributions as an entrepreneur and educator, she was awarded the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1989. She resided in Germany until her death in 2001 in St. Gallen.
