Over a career spanning 46 years, Bashirul Haq designed more than 300 buildings while establishing a practice centered on environmentally and socially responsive design. Born in 1942 within the Brahmanbaria District of what was then the British Raj, he developed a significant body of work across residential, civic, and educational sectors before his death in 2020.
Academic Foundations and International Exposure
Haq pursued his formal architectural training at the National College of Arts in Lahore, Pakistan, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1964. He later moved to the United States, receiving the John Heinrich Tuition, Scholarship and Teaching Assistantship at the University of New Mexico. In 1975, he completed his master’s in architecture. His international perspective was further expanded during an invited visiting professorship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1989.

Upon returning to his home country, Haq established Bashirul Haq & Associates in 1977. His design philosophy drew inspiration from the works of Alvar Aalto and Aldo Rossi. His portfolio includes large-scale projects such as the 20-storied Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation head office and the Association for Social Advancement head office. Beyond commercial structures, he engaged in community-based initiatives, including cyclone-resistant housing projects and multipurpose shelters designed for the German Red Cross.
Recognitions and Institutional Contributions
Haq served as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Fazlur Rahman Khan Foundation and held the title of Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. His work earned multiple shortlistings for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1980, 1992, and 2001. His projects were documented in various international exhibitions, notably the 2017 Bengal Stream display which traveled from Basel to Bordeaux and Frankfurt.
