Early Career and Education
Born in Moscow in 1983, Smolyaninov spent his formative years in Korolyov. He enrolled at the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts at sixteen, joining the acting section of the directing department under Leonid Heifetz. Before graduating in 2004, he had already accumulated nearly a dozen screen credits. His performance as Lyutyy in the 2005 war film The 9th Company earned him significant recognition, leading to his induction into the Sovremennik Theatre troupe in 2006.

During his tenure at the Sovremennik Theatre, Smolyaninov appeared in diverse productions, including Family Situations and the play version of Antony & Cleopatra. On television, he portrayed ambulance doctor Oleg Samarin in the series Samara, which premiered in 2012 and ran for two seasons. In 2014, he participated in the televised skating competition Ice Age, partnered with Tatiana Totmianina.
Transition to International Projects
Following his departure from Russia, Smolyaninov settled in Riga, Latvia, where he formed the musical project cheLovek. He returned to international film in 2025, receiving the Best Actor Award at the Prague Independent Film Festival for his English-language debut in I Never Said Goodbye. In 2026, he starred in the film Minotaur, which received the Grand Prix at the 79th Cannes Film Festival.
Political Stance and Legal Status
In October 2022, after speaking out against the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Smolyaninov faced charges for discrediting the Russian armed forces. The Russian Ministry of Justice designated him a foreign agent in January 2023. By October 2025, the Federal Security Service initiated a criminal case against him regarding alleged seizure of power and participation in a terrorist community.
