The interwar years saw sustained growth, establishing the firm as the largest shipping company in Denmark by the start of the Second World War. When Denmark faced German occupation in April 1940, Møller issued telegraphic instructions to his captains to disregard orders originating from the occupied territory. While his son, Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller, managed significant portions of the company from the United States, the firm sustained financial losses due to restricted compensation from the American government for wartime vessel usage.
Diversification and Legacy
Beyond maritime logistics, Møller diversified into resource extraction and retail. He obtained a contract for North Sea oil drilling in 1962, signaling an expansion into the energy sector. Two years later, he partnered with Herman Salling to establish Dansk Supermarked, a retail venture that evolved into the largest such entity in Denmark. Møller held several honors throughout his life, including the Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog in 1922 and the Grand Cross in 1951. Upon his death in 1965 at age 89 in Copenhagen, he was succeeded by his son, Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller.
