Armando Manzanero

Mexican musician, composer pianist (1935–2020)

Nunca en el Mundo, a melody composed when Armando Manzanero was fifteen, served as the genesis for a career spanning over four hundred original songs. This Mexican songwriter and pianist established himself as a fixture of the postwar era, with his compositions eventually being recorded by international artists including Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, and Tony Bennett.

Early Development and Musical Foundation

Born on 7 December 1934 in Mérida, Yucatán, Manzanero grew up in a household centered on music. His father, Santiago Manzanero, worked as a singer and composer, while his mother, Juanita Canché Baqueiro, played the jarana jarocha. At age eight, he entered the Escuela de Bellas Artes to begin formal studies, which he later expanded upon in Mexico City.

Professional Rise and Songwriting Success

By the late 1950s, he secured roles as a musical director and promoter with CBS International and EMI. He accompanied performers such as Pedro Vargas and Lucho Gatica before releasing his first album, Mi Primera Grabación, in 1959. His breakthrough continued through the 1960s, winning the Festival de la Canción in Miami in 1965 with Cuando Estoy Contigo. His composition Somos Novios saw significant international reach when reissued as It's Impossible, performed by Perry Como and earning a Grammy nomination.

Leadership and Industry Impact

Beyond his creative output, Manzanero held influential positions within the Mexican Society of Authors and Composers. He served as vice president from 1982 until 2011, subsequently acting as president and director. In these roles, he focused on strengthening copyright protections. His advocacy contributed to the organization achieving international recognition.

Final Years and Legacy

Manzanero maintained an active performance schedule for five decades, appearing in venues from Madison Square Garden to the Teresa Carreño Theater. He recorded over thirty albums and composed film scores. Following a diagnosis of COVID-19, he died in Mexico City on 28 December 2020 at the age of 85. His ashes were returned to Mérida, where a museum remains in his honor.
