Antonio Stefano Benni served as President of the General Confederation of Italian Industry from 1923 until 1934, holding significant influence over the industrial landscape of the Kingdom of Italy. Born in Cuneo in 1880, his career transitioned from apprentice to corporate leader and eventually a cabinet minister, marking a life deeply integrated into both commercial and political sectors.
Early Career and Industrial Expansion
Benni began his professional life as an apprentice for Ercole Marelli in 1894. Following the company's shift toward specializing in electric fans in 1896, Benni assumed responsibility for commercial and organizational management. He facilitated international expansion through extensive travel across Europe and Latin America starting in 1900. By 1905, the enterprise opened a large facility in Sesto San Giovanni. In 1919, Benni collaborated with Ercole Marelli and Giovanni Agnelli to establish the Fabbrica Italiana Magneti Marelli, backed by capital from Fiat.
