Early Career and Banking Tenure

Born in 1948 in Mollerussa, Spain, Brufau pursued academic qualifications at La Salle Bonanova before earning a degree in Economics from the University of Barcelona. He further obtained an MA in Economics from IESE Business School at the University of Navarre. His initial professional experience included a stint at Arthur Andersen, where he advanced to the positions of partner and director of auditing. In 1988, he transitioned to the financial sector by joining La Caixa as deputy general manager and head of the industrial entity. Working alongside Josep Vilarasau and Isidre Fainé, he facilitated the merger of the Pension Fund of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands with the Caja de Ahorros y Monte de Piedad de Barcelona. By 1994, he took on the presidency of Port Aventura on behalf of the bank.

Transition to Energy Leadership

Brufau joined the Board of Directors of Repsol in 1996, holding that seat until 2004. Concurrent with his board duties, he served as the president of the natural gas division at Repsol starting in July 1997. His influence expanded into institutional leadership when he was named president of the Cercle d'Economia, an office he maintained from July 2002 until July 2005. During this period, he was also the sole Spanish member of the Executive Committee for the International Chamber of Commerce, a role he occupied until December 2005.
