A 1900 dissertation submitted to the École Normale Supérieure established the mathematical framework for analyzing the transverse vibrations of non-homogeneous elastic bars. Anton Davidoglu authored this foundational study, marking the first time the method of successive approximations, pioneered by Émile Picard, found application in the complex analysis of fourth-order differential equations regarding deformable solids.
Academic Formation in Paris
Born in Bârlad in 1876 to Profira Moțoc and Doctor Cleante Davidoglu, Anton Davidoglu pursued advanced mathematical studies in France. At the École Normale Supérieure, he worked under the guidance of Jacques Hadamard. His doctoral research concentrated on the rigorous application of successive approximations to mechanical problems, a technical advancement that bridged abstract differential calculus with physical engineering constraints.

Take the IQ test →Institutional Leadership in Bucharest
Upon returning to Romania, Davidoglu established a dual career at the University of Bucharest and the Academy of High Commercial and Industrial Studies, now known as the Bucharest University of Economic Studies. In 1913, he took on the role of founding rector at the latter institution. He maintained his teaching commitments at the University of Bucharest until his retirement from academic life in 1941.
Contributions to Mathematics
Davidoglu served as a founding member of the Romanian Academy of Sciences. His body of work includes specialized investigations into the differential equations governing turbulent motion and elastic vibration. His formal publications, including papers in the Annales Scientifiques de l'École Normale Supérieure, remain part of the literature of mathematical foundations. In 1976, his professional impact was commemorated with a dedicated Romanian postage stamp.
