His performance in the 1961 film Goodbye Again secured him the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actor as well as a David di Donatello for Best Foreign Actor. During this period, he also collaborated with director Orson Welles on the 1962 production, The Trial.
Later Roles and Directorial Work
Perkins returned to American cinema with 1968's Pretty Poison. His later filmography included Catch-22 in 1970, The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean in 1972, and Murder on the Orient Express in 1974. He later expanded his career into directing, notably helming Psycho III, a project in which he also starred. His final screen appearance occurred in the 1992 NBC television film, In the Deep Woods.
