Anthony Annan

The career of Ghanaian midfielder Anthony Annan, born in Accra on 21 July 1986, spans multiple European leagues and formative years in his home country. Educated at Ghana National College, he transitioned from local Colts football to become a fixture in the heart of professional midfield lineups across Norway, Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands.

Early Career in Ghana

Annan began his journey with the Colts Super Rainbow Stars in Cape Coast before moving to the Cape Coast Venomous Vipers. He joined Sekondi Hasaacas in 2003, followed by a move to Accra Hearts of Oak in 2005. During his time at Hearts of Oak, he earned recognition as a promising young midfielder, developing skills that balanced tactical defensive control with offensive contributions.

Norwegian Tenure

Annan signed for Start in January 2007. Following his debut in a loss against Aalesunds, he faced challenges with injury and illness during that season. He later joined Stabæk on loan, where he debuted in a 0-0 draw against Molde. In August 2008, he transferred to Rosenborg for approximately 10 million kroner. At Rosenborg, he won league titles in 2009 and 2010. His performance in 2010 earned him the Kniksen Award for midfielder of the year and the Kniksen of the Year accolade.

European Transfers

In January 2011, Annan signed a three-year contract with Schalke 04 for a reported fee of €3.5 million. He made his debut in a 0-0 draw against Borussia Dortmund. His time in Germany was curtailed by a toe injury and international commitments. Subsequently, his professional path included spells with Vitesse and Club Atlético Osasuna, alongside representing Ghana in the 2008, 2010, and 2012 Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, as well as the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
