On 17 March 1902, Anna Honzáková became the first woman to graduate from the Charles-Ferdinand University in Prague with a medical degree. Her achievement marked a turning point in Czech academic history, establishing a local precedent that had previously required students like Bohuslava Kecková and Anna Bayerová to seek their certifications at Swiss institutions.
Academic Hurdles
The path to her qualification was obstructed by restrictive policies at the First Faculty of Medicine. Initially restricted to attending lectures as an observer, Honzáková was barred from sitting for official examinations for five years. The eventual policy shift allowed her to formally test in the subjects she had already studied, clearing the way for her historic graduation.

Post-graduation, Honzáková began an unpaid traineeship under Charles Maydl, a pioneer in the fields of Czech surgery and anaesthesiology. Maydl's death ended her opportunity within the university system, and subsequent attempts to secure a position at a civil hospital failed. Consequently, she opened a private gynecological practice on the street of Na Moráni in Prague. She maintained this clinic for thirty-five years while concurrently serving as the school physician for the Minerva Grammar School.
Social and Medical Advocacy
Beyond her private practice, Honzáková engaged in public health and social support initiatives. She co-authored a guide with Klementina Hanušová focusing on the protection of children against tuberculosis. Her commitment to public welfare extended to the creation of a financial fund designed to assist impoverished and ill women. Additionally, she documented the history of her predecessor by writing a biography of Anna Bayerová.
