Anna Gavalda

French author

Three-quarters of a million copies of a debut short story collection, Je voudrais que quelqu'un m'attende quelque part, entered the French literary landscape in 1999. This initial success, which earned the Grand prix RTL-Lire in 2000, launched the writing career of a former high school teacher from Boulogne-Billancourt who would later achieve international recognition for her novels.

Early Career and Initial Success

Before gaining fame as a novelist, Gavalda taught French in a high school. Her breakthrough came with the 1999 publication of her short stories. The collection achieved substantial commercial success, selling across twenty-seven countries. By 2007, her first three published books reached a milestone of over 3 million copies sold within France, cementing her position in the contemporary literary scene.
