Born in New York City in 1958, Bassett spent part of her childhood in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and St. Petersburg, Florida. She excelled academically at Boca Ciega High School, becoming the school's first African American student admitted to the National Honor Society. She continued her education at Yale University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in African American Studies in 1980, followed by a Master of Fine Arts from the Yale School of Drama in 1983.

Bassett initially supported her transition into acting by working as a photo researcher and salon receptionist. Her stage credits include appearances in August Wilson plays such as Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and Joe Turner's Come and Gone at the Yale Repertory Theatre. Following her 1986 film debut, she gained industry recognition through performances in Boyz n the Hood in 1991 and her role as Betty Shabazz in 1992's Malcolm X. Her portrayal of Tina Turner in the 1993 biopic What's Love Got to Do with It served as a major breakthrough, securing her a Golden Globe Award.
Film and Television Longevity
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Bassett appeared in projects including How Stella Got Her Groove Back and The Rosa Parks Story. Her recent work includes playing Queen Ramonda in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films Black Panther, Avengers: Endgame, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Since 2018, she has served as a producer and lead actor on the drama series 9-1-1, portraying the character Athena Grant.
