The Chair of Algebraic Surgery at the University of Edinburgh was held by Andrew Ranicki, a researcher whose career spanned decades of inquiry into algebraic topology. Born in 1948 in London, he navigated a path through international academic institutions before settling in Scotland, where he contributed extensively to the study of manifolds and mathematical surgery until his passing in 2018.
Early Education and Academic Foundation
Born Andrzej Aleksander Ranicki on 30 December 1948, he moved between Warsaw, Frankfurt am Main, and Hamburg during his youth. At sixteen, he attended the King's School, Canterbury. He later enrolled at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he studied under topologists Andrew Casson and John Frank Adams. After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1969, he completed his doctoral studies in 1973, focusing on algebraic L-theory. Between 1972 and 1977, he served as a Fellow of Trinity College.

He returned to the United Kingdom to join the University of Edinburgh in 1982, initially as a lecturer. Following a promotion to reader in 1987, he was appointed to the Chair of Algebraic Surgery in 1995. Throughout his career, he maintained international research ties, including multiple periods as a visiting scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn.
Mathematical Contributions and Recognition
His research output included extensive work on high-dimensional knot theory and the algebraic theory of surgery. He authored several volumes, including 'Exact sequences in the algebraic theory of surgery' and 'Algebraic and Geometric Surgery'. He also edited major collections such as 'The Hauptvermutung Book' and various conference proceedings. In recognition of his work, he received the Whitehead Prize in 1983 and the Senior Berwick Prize in 1994. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1992.
