Andrea Kdolsky

Andrea Kdolsky served as the Federal Minister for Health, Family and Youth in Austria between 2007 and 2008. Born in Vienna in 1962, Kdolsky began her higher education by studying law and economics at the Vienna University of Economics and Business, where she completed studies in 1985. She shifted her academic focus to medicine at the University of Vienna, attending from 1982 to 1985 and again from 1986 to 1993, eventually earning her Doctor of Medicine.

Medical and Administrative Career

Kdolsky worked as an anaesthesiologist and served at the Vienna General Hospital from 2001 until 2004. Her professional experience includes employment with the Niederösterreichische Landeskliniken-Holding and a consulting role at PricewaterhouseCoopers starting in 2009. These positions provided the operational experience that underpinned her later work as a non-fiction author and policy analyst focusing on the structural issues within the domestic health system.

Political Tenure and Departure

Appointed by the Austrian Federal Government, she held the position of Federal Minister for Health, Family and Youth from 11 January 2007 to 2 December 2008 within the cabinet of Alfred Gusenbauer. Throughout this period, she maintained membership in the Austrian People's Party, the ÖVP. She remained with the party until March 2023, choosing to resign following the formation of a coalition government between the ÖVP and the FPÖ in Lower Austria after the January 2023 state elections, citing opposition to the FPÖ state leadership.

Literary Contributions

Her writing career includes both practical and critical works. In 2007, she co-edited a cookbook titled Schweinsbraten & Co: die besten Rezepte vom Schwein, published by Holzhausen-Verlag. In 2012, she published the non-fiction book Hauptsache gesund: die unheilbaren Krankheiten des österreichischen Gesundheitswesens through Goldegg Verlag, which critiques the persistent ailments of the national healthcare infrastructure.
