André Leysen

businessman (1927–2015)

Antwerp served as both the origin and the final resting place for André Leysen, a Belgian entrepreneur whose career spanned over six decades of industrial transformation. Born in 1927, he navigated the complex shift from family-owned shipping operations to the boardrooms of multinational corporations, maintaining a significant presence in European business through the turn of the twenty-first century.

Early Career and Ahlers N.V.

Leysen began his professional trajectory in 1952 at Ahlers N.V. in Antwerp. This shipping firm, linked to the family estate of his wife, Anne Ahlers, whom he married in 1951, provided the foundation for his professional experience. He remained at the company for twenty-four years until 1976. During this period, he raised four children: Bettina, Christian, Thomas, and Sabina.
