Background and Education

Born in Mumbai at Breach Candy Hospital, Patel is of Gujarati, Sindhi, and Punjabi descent. She attended the Cathedral and John Connon School, where she served as head girl. Her academic path led to Tufts University in the United States, where she initially studied bio-genetic engineering before transitioning to an economics degree. Following graduation, she worked as an economic analyst at Khandwala Securities Limited before shifting her focus toward the performing arts.

Early Career and Breakthrough

Her entry into the film industry followed stints in theatre under Satyadev Dubey and modeling for brands including Cadburys, Lux, and Bajaj. In 2000, she secured the lead in Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai after replacing another actor. This role established her status in Hindi cinema. That same year, she appeared in the Telugu action film Badri. In 2001, she portrayed Sakeena in the period drama Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, a commercial success that earned her a Filmfare Special Performance Award.

Professional Fluctuations

Following her early successes, Patel featured in several films during 2002, including Humraaz, where she portrayed a character with complex motivations. The subsequent years saw varied box office results, with the actor shifting into supporting roles in projects such as Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. and Bhool Bhulaiyaa in 2007, as well as the 2013 action film Race 2. Her career saw a resurgence in 2023 with the release of the sequel Gadar 2, which became the highest-grossing film of her career.
