Early Career and Vocation
Born in 1696 in Marianella near Naples, Liguori initially pursued a career in law due to his father's influence and his own academic aptitude. Despite achieving success as a lawyer, he experienced a profound shift in perspective at age 27. After losing a significant legal case, he abandoned the profession, eventually seeking ordination. He was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1726, focusing his efforts on assisting the homeless and disenfranchised youth within the Kingdom of Naples.

In November 1732, Liguori founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. The order was established to conduct popular missions in both urban and rural settings, specifically targeting those living in poverty. A central tenet of his theological approach was a rejection of the moral rigorism associated with Jansenism. He advocated for treating penitents with compassion, emphasizing the salvation of souls over strict punitive measures.
Ecclesiastical Service and Intellectual Output
In 1762, he reluctantly accepted the appointment as the Roman Catholic Bishop of Sant’Agata de’ Goti, a position he held until 1775. During his tenure, he prioritized the reform of the local seminary and the spiritual discipline of his clergy. Throughout his life, Liguori was a prolific writer, authoring numerous devotional works and a significant volume on moral theology. Beyond his writings, he was a skilled composer, famously creating the hymn Tu scendi dalle stelle.
