Early Career and Professional Beginnings
McCoist began his professional journey at St Johnstone in 1978 after signing from Fir Park Boys Club. His debut occurred on 7 April 1979 during a victory over Raith Rovers. Following a series of performances that drew attention from English clubs, he transferred to Sunderland in 1981 for a fee of £400,000. Despite a difficult spell in the English First Division, he recorded nine goals in 65 appearances.

In 1983, McCoist returned to Scotland to join Rangers for £185,000. During his fifteen-year tenure, he secured ten league championship titles, including the period of nine consecutive championships between 1988–89 and 1996–97. He gained individual recognition as Europe's top goalscorer in 1992 and 1993 and earned the Scottish Footballer of the Year awards in 1992. By the end of his playing career, he had accumulated 260 goals for Rangers and Kilmarnock.
Management and Media Engagement
Transitioning from the pitch, McCoist served as a team captain on the BBC sports quiz A Question of Sport between 1996 and 2007. In 2007, he became assistant manager to Walter Smith at Rangers. Following Smith's departure in 2011, McCoist took over as manager. His tenure coincided with the club's financial crisis and liquidation in 2012. After overseeing promotions from the fourth tier, he resigned in December 2014 and left the club in 2015.
