American actress

Growing up in a Spanish-speaking household in Houston, Alexis Bledel began her career as a model after being scouted in a local shopping mall. She later left New York University to pursue acting, securing her breakthrough role as Rory Gilmore in the television series Gilmore Girls at age 18, which launched a career in film and television.

Early Development and Television Breakthrough

Born in 1981, Bledel attended St. Agnes Academy, graduating in 1999. Her mother encouraged her participation in community theater to manage shyness, leading to roles in local productions like Our Town. Her professional trajectory changed in 2000 when she debuted as Rory Gilmore in The WB comedy-drama Gilmore Girls. She portrayed this character for seven seasons until 2007 and later reprised the role in the 2016 Netflix revival, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.

Transition to Feature Film

Bledel transitioned to feature films with the 2002 adaptation of Tuck Everlasting. Her filmography expanded with roles in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and its 2008 sequel, alongside appearances in Sin City, Post Grad, The Conspirator, and Jenny's Wedding. She also performed in the stage production of Regrets at the New York City Center.

Critical Recognition in Drama

In 2017, she joined the cast of the Hulu drama The Handmaid's Tale as Emily Malek. This performance earned her the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series in 2017. She remained with the series through its fourth season, having also appeared in recurring roles in the television drama Mad Men and the series finale of ER.
