Early Development and Cycling
Born in 1974 in Waidhofen an der Thaya, Austria, Alexander Wurz was the son of the accomplished rallycross driver Franz Wurz. Before moving to motorized competition, he focused on competitive cycling. His proficiency in this field was evident at age 12 when he secured the BMX World Championship title in 1986.

Wurz began his motorsport path with karting before transitioning to Formula Ford in 1991. By 1993, he progressed to the German Formula Three Championship. His early professional career included a stint in the DTM with the Joest Racing team in 1996, the same year he secured his first Le Mans 24 Hours win alongside teammates Davy Jones and Manuel Reuter.
Formula One Campaign
The Formula One debut for Wurz occurred at the 1997 Canadian Grand Prix while filling in for Gerhard Berger at Benetton. He recorded his first podium at the British Grand Prix that same year. Between 1997 and 2007, he drove for Benetton, McLaren, and Williams, accumulating 69 Grand Prix entries and three podium finishes. Following his departure from Williams in 2007, he transitioned into test and mentorship roles with Honda, Brawn GP, and later Williams.
Endurance and Rallycross Success
In 2009, Wurz achieved his second Le Mans 24 Hours victory, driving for Peugeot alongside Marc Gené and David Brabham. This success created a 13-year interval between his first and second Le Mans wins, the longest in the event's history. Beyond endurance racing, he continued his father's legacy by making his debut in the FIA World Rallycross Championship in 2018 at Lånkebanen.
