Exploration and Geography
Early in his career, Kaulbars focused on terrain mapping beyond the Issyk-Kul. His findings were compiled into a geographical study of the Tien Shan region. In 1870, he surveyed the summit of Khan Tengri while investigating potential mountain passages. His subsequent participation in the 1873 expedition to the Khanate of Khiva allowed him to map the Amu Darya river delta and investigate dry riverbeds, including the Uzboy River, earning him a second gold medal for his technical papers.

Kaulbars participated in several major military campaigns, beginning with the suppression of the Polish Uprising in 1861. He later took part in the Russo-Turkish War between 1877 and 1878. In 1882, he served as the Minister of War for the Principality of Bulgaria. During the 1905 Russian Revolution, he held command over the Odessa Military District, where he faced criticism regarding his response to the local pogrom.
Final Years and Legacy
Upon the outbreak of World War I, Kaulbars was placed in charge of all military aviation activities for the Russian Empire. Despite his extensive background, he was removed from service in 1915. He briefly served as military governor of Odessa in 1916 before joining the Volunteer Army in 1918. He spent his final years as a telegraph company employee in Paris and is buried at the Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois Russian Cemetery.
