Alexander Alexandrov

Russian composer (1883-1946)

Alexander Alexandrov belongs to the musical record as a figure whose work outlasted the moment that produced it.

The record lists Alexander Alexandrov as Russian composer (1883-1946).

Alexander Alexandrov was born at Plakhino in 1883. His recorded nationality is Russia. He trained at Saint Petersburg Conservatory and Moscow Conservatory.

Recording arrived in this generation and changed everything: a performance could now outlive the performer.

He worked as composer, conductor and choir director.

He performed with Union of Soviet Composers and Alexandrov Ensemble.

Among his best-known works are State Anthem of the Russian Federation, State Anthem of the Soviet Union and The Sacred War. Music outlives its context more reliably than any other art, and usually for reasons its makers did not predict.

Recognition followed: State Stalin Prize, 1st degree (1942), Medal "For the Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945", Order of Lenin (1943) and Order of the Red Star (1935).

That the work came out of Russia shaped it: musical traditions, training institutions and the reach of a recording industry all differ by country.

Alexander Alexandrov died in 1946, aged 63. The recordings and scores remain, which is the only durable form a musical life takes.
