Founded in 2002, the Mathematikum serves as the first museum in Germany dedicated to mathematics. The project reflects the lifelong work of Albrecht Beutelspacher, a mathematician who bridged the gap between complex academic research and public engagement through his books, television appearances, and the design of interactive exhibits for a wide audience.
Academic Foundation
Born in 1950 in Tübingen, Germany, Beutelspacher pursued studies in mathematics, physics, and philosophy at the University of Tübingen between 1969 and 1973. He later completed his doctoral degree at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in 1976 under the supervision of Judita Cofman. His early professional career included an associate professorship at the University of Mainz from 1982 to 1985, followed by a three-year tenure in the research department at Siemens.

Beutelspacher held the chair for geometry and discrete mathematics at the University of Giessen from 1988 until his retirement in 2018. During this long tenure, he produced numerous textbooks on finite geometry, linear algebra, and cryptography, contributing to the academic training of students in mathematics and computer science. His pedagogical approach often focused on clarifying complex structural concepts, resulting in influential guides such as his work on the formulation of mathematical thoughts.
Public Engagement
Beyond the lecture hall, Beutelspacher built a career as a popularizer of mathematics. He contributed to the magazine Bild der Wissenschaft and moderated mathematical series for educational television. His outreach activities were recognized with the Communicator Prize in 2000 and the IQ Award in 2004. In 2010, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Siegen, and in 2015, he was awarded both the Peano Prize and the Hessian Order of Merit.
