Herzog spent his entire professional life at the Polytechnicum of Zurich, beginning in 1875. His work involved linking the mathematical basis of mechanical systems with practical engineering. Over the course of his career, he published various articles centered on mathematical mechanics. Beyond his faculty duties, he held a significant administrative role as the General Manager and director of the Mechanical Technical Department between 1895 and 1899.
Public Service and Institutional Oversight
In addition to his academic responsibilities, Herzog engaged in local governance and educational oversight. He served as a member of the Zurich City Council and acted as the president of the escolar commission. His life concluded in 1909 in Mammern, marking the end of a career defined by both institutional management and mathematical pedagogy.
Intervention in Einstein's Early Admission
During his tenure as general manager, Herzog evaluated Albert Einstein's application for entrance to the Polytechnic. While Einstein failed the entrance examination across French, chemistry, and biology, Herzog identified exceptional marks in physics and mathematics. He advised the prospective student to attend the cantonalschule of Aarau for one year, providing a pathway for subsequent admission.
