The Vizcaya Bridge, an engineering marvel spanning the Nervion river between Portugalete and Getxo, stands as the crowning achievement of Alberto de Palacio y Elissague. Spanning from 1890 to 1893, this structure utilized an innovative transporter design, marking the first of its kind ever constructed and cementing the reputation of its creator within the global engineering community.
Early Education and Influences
Born in 1856 in Sare, Northern Basque Country, Palacio spent his formative years in Gordexola. His academic path took him to Barcelona for architectural studies before relocating to Paris. During his time in France, he engaged in a multidisciplinary education encompassing mathematics, engineering, astronomy, and medicine. Notably, he trained as a student and disciple of Gustave Eiffel, a relationship that fundamentally shaped his later reliance on iron and glass materials.
