Throughout his career, he directed a diverse portfolio of entities spanning mining, retail, and financial services, establishing himself as a significant figure in the Mexican economy until his death in 2022.

Early Education and Professional Preparation

Born in Mexico City on 22 August 1931, Baillères completed his secondary education at Culver Academies. He subsequently attended the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México, earning a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1953. This institution, established by his father, remained a focal point of his professional and philanthropic involvement throughout his life, where he later served as a primary board member.

Operations of Grupo BAL

As chairman, Baillères managed a collection of companies that secured a prominent position in Mexican commerce. The portfolio included Industrias Peñoles, recognized as a major mining organization and the world's largest producer of silver. In the retail sector, he oversaw the department store chain El Palacio de Hierro. His influence extended to financial services through the management of Grupo Nacional Provincial, an insurance provider, and the pensions and annuities business Grupo Profuturo. Additionally, he held a seat on the board of directors for Fresnillo plc.

Public Recognition and Wealth

The Senate of the Republic presented the Belisario Domínguez Medal of Honor to Baillères on 12 November 2015, marking the highest state recognition in Mexico. His commercial activities frequently drew international attention; in 2012, Bloomberg identified him as the 35th wealthiest individual globally with an estimated net worth of US$19.3 billion. By 2021, Forbes estimated his net worth at US$10.1 billion.

Personal Life and Final Years

Baillères resided in Mexico City with his wife, Teresa Gual, and their seven children. Beyond his corporate and educational obligations, he maintained interests in agriculture and bullfighting. He possessed the 92-meter yacht known as Mayan Queen IV. He died in his home city on 2 February 2022, at the age of 90.
