Lacking formal film scoring experience at the time, he taught himself the fundamentals using a technical manual by Earl Hagen, famously utilizing everyday objects like beer cans to create percussion textures for his initial soundtrack.
Formative Years and Early Career
Born in New York City in 1950, Silvestri spent his youth in Teaneck, New Jersey. He attended Teaneck High School, graduating in 1968 before enrolling at the Berklee College of Music for two years. His early performance experience included a stint as a drummer for the Teaneck rock ensemble the Wildcats in 1966. By 1970, he relocated to Los Angeles to pursue music, initially working as a session guitarist.

From 1978 to 1983, Silvestri served as the primary composer for the television series CHiPs, contributing music to 95 episodes. His career trajectory shifted significantly following a meeting with director Robert Zemeckis during the production of Romancing the Stone in 1984. This partnership resulted in an extensive body of work, including scores for the Back to the Future trilogy, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Forrest Gump, Contact, and The Polar Express.
Versatility in Scoring
Beyond his work with Zemeckis, Silvestri has maintained a diverse portfolio across multiple genres. He composed scores for action titles including Predator, The Abyss, and the first three entries in the Night at the Museum franchise. His collaborative output extends to directors such as Stephen Sommers, for whom he scored The Mummy Returns, Van Helsing, and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.
