At the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, Budikusuma defeated his compatriot Ardy Wiranata to win the gold medal. This victory coincided with his then-fiancé Susi Susanti winning the women's singles gold. Upon returning to Indonesia in August 1992, the pair was met by a crowd estimated at 500,000 to one million people, resulting in a two-hour parade through the streets of Jakarta. Following the event, Yogie S. M., the Governor of West Java, awarded him honorary citizenship.
