Early Development and Training
Born in 1944 on the island of Lefkada, Baltsa began her musical engagement with piano studies at age seven. By 1958, she relocated to Athens to dedicate her focus to vocal performance. She graduated from the National Conservatory of Athens in 1965. Following this, she traveled to Munich, utilizing a Maria Callas scholarship to further refine her technique.

Following her 1968 Frankfurt debut, she secured a position as Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier at the Vienna State Opera in 1970. Her career was defined by frequent collaborations with conductor Herbert von Karajan and regular appearances at the Salzburg Festival. Her repertoire includes works by Mozart, Rossini, Mascagni, Saint-Saëns, Verdi, Bellini, Offenbach, and Donizetti. In 1992, she appeared in the Austrian film Duett, portraying an opera singer. Her performance history continued into the 21st century, notably singing Klytemnestra in Richard Strauss’s Elektra at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in 2017.
Honors and Institutional Affiliations
In 1980, the Vienna State Opera designated her as an Österreichischer Kammersänger. She holds membership in the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Friends of Music Society. In 2025, she received the International Opera Award for Lifetime Achievement.
