Adriaan Cornelis Zaanen

Dutch mathematician (1913-2003)

A doctoral thesis regarding the convergence of Sturm–Liouville boundary value problems earned Adriaan Cornelis Zaanen his Ph.D. from Leiden University in 1938. This initial academic milestone marked the beginning of a sustained career in functional analysis, characterized by extensive research into integral equations and the development of the theory of Riesz spaces within the Netherlands.

Early Career and Research

Following his graduation in 1938, Zaanen spent nearly a decade working as a mathematics teacher at the Hogere Burgerschool in Rotterdam. Despite the constraints of the German occupation, he dedicated his personal time to deep study of Stefan Banach’s foundational work and Marshall H. Stone’s research on linear transformations in Hilbert space. His findings on symmetrisable kernels appeared in the Proceedings of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences between 1946 and 1947.

International Appointments

Zaanen held academic posts across three continents and institutions. In 1947, he accepted a professorship at the Technische Hogeschool Bandoeng in Indonesia. He returned to the Netherlands in 1950 to join the faculty at the Delft University of Technology, where he had previously held a teaching role. He remained there until 1956, during which time he completed his influential 1953 volume, Linear Analysis.

Tenure at Leiden and Theoretical Contributions

In 1956, Zaanen returned to Leiden University as a professor, a position he retained until his retirement in 1982. During this period, he collaborated with Wim Luxemburg to establish a comprehensive research programme focused on Riesz spaces. This initiative produced eight doctoral theses and a landmark two-volume series on the subject. Zaanen served as chairperson of the Dutch Mathematical Society from 1970 to 1972 and was an editor for the journal Nieuw Archief voor Wiskunde for nearly three decades.

Professional Recognition

His academic contributions were recognized by his election to the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1960. Upon his departure from active teaching in 1982, he was named a Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion. He also served as a member of the Curatorium of the Mathematisch Centrum from 1965 until 1979.
