Born in 1960 in Chinnor, Clayton spent part of his childhood in Nairobi before his family settled in Malahide in 1965. In 1976, Clayton attended a meeting prompted by a bulletin board advertisement placed by Larry Mullen Jr. The group, initially including Dik Evans, Bono, and The Edge, operated under names such as Feedback and The Hype before settling on U2. Clayton assumed early management duties until 1978, when he transitioned the role to Paul McGuinness. While the band’s internal dynamics faced tension during the 1981 recording of October due to differing spiritual approaches, Clayton remained a permanent fixture through every subsequent tour and album release.
Technical Style and Collaboration
Clayton’s bass technique, described by instructor Patrick Pfeiffer as harmonic syncopation, emphasizes driving rhythm through anticipation of chord shifts. Although largely self-taught, he sought formal training in New York alongside Mullen following the 1995 Zoo TV Tour.
