Achille Castiglioni

Italian architect and designer (1918–2002)

Achille Castiglioni belongs to the record of architecture as a figure whose buildings outlasted the taste that commissioned them.

The record lists Achille Castiglioni as Italian architect and designer (1918–2002).

Achille Castiglioni was born at Milan in 1918. His recorded nationality is Kingdom of Italy. He trained at Polytechnic University of Milan.

Modernism rejected ornament and historical style, arguing that a building should express its structure and its function - a claim contested ever since.

He is recorded as architect, designer and industrial designer.

His work is associated with the castiglioni method.

Among his best-known works are Arco light, Lierna Chair and Luminator. Architecture is the art that cannot be avoided: people live inside the argument.

Recognition followed: Compasso d'Oro, Gold Medal for Italian Architecture, honorary doctorate and honorary degree.

That the work was built in Kingdom of Italy shaped it: climate, materials, planning law and who holds the budget all decide what can actually be built.

Achille Castiglioni died in 2002, aged 84. The buildings remain, still in use by people who never knew the name - which is the particular afterlife architecture offers.
