Lineage and Early Life
Born in 897, Abu al-Faraj al-Isfahani descended from Marwan II, the final Umayyad caliph. Despite the epithet al-Isfahani, which refers to the city of Isfahan, his family was firmly established in the Abbasid capital of Baghdad and Samarra. His great-grandfather, Ahmad b. al-Haytham, settled in Samarra during the ninth century, initiating a family history deeply embedded in the administrative and scribal networks of the Abbasid elite.

Al-Isfahani leveraged his family's connections to access a vast array of informants and scholars. His education involved direct transmission from experts such as Muhammad b. Jarir al-Tabari and Ali b. Sulayman al-Akhfash. He traveled extensively to gather information, recording traditions from scholars in Antakya, Ahwaz, Raqqa, Basra, and Kufa. These meticulous citations of his sources provided the framework for his literary and historical output.
Patronage and Career
The later years of his career saw him residing in various cultural centers under the protection of prominent figures. He spent time in Aleppo at the court of the Hamdanid governor Sayf ad-Dawlah, to whom he dedicated his most significant work. He also maintained ties with the Buwayhid vizier Ibn 'Abbad in Ray. Throughout these tenures, he engaged in correspondence with Umayyad rulers in al-Andalus, sharing his works while continuing his research as a writer, poet, and historian.
