Israeli mathematician (1891-1965)

The Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory remains a cornerstone of modern mathematical logic, derived from the foundational improvements Abraham Fraenkel proposed to Ernst Zermelo's axiomatic system during the 1920s. Born in Munich in 1891, Fraenkel spent his career bridging European academic traditions with the developing intellectual landscape of Mandatory Palestine and the state of Israel.

Academic Foundations and Early Career

Fraenkel received his education at several German institutions, including the Luitpold-Gymnasium, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, and the universities of Berlin, Breslau, and Marburg. He began lecturing at the University of Marburg in 1916 and attained a professorship there by 1922. During this period, his research focused on Kurt Hensel's p-adic numbers and the theory of rings, while he simultaneously began his intensive work in axiomatic set theory.

Contributions to Set Theory

His primary influence on mathematics occurred through his efforts to refine the Zermelo axiomatic system. By publishing two critical papers in 1922 and 1925, he addressed limitations in the existing framework, leading to what is now known as Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory. His book Einleitung in die Mengenlehre, released in 1919, established his standing in the field, which he expanded through subsequent historical analysis of Georg Cantor and the algebraic works of Gauss.

Relocation and Public Life

Following a brief tenure at Kiel University between 1928 and 1933, Fraenkel moved to Mandatory Palestine due to the dismissal of Jewish academics under the Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service. He joined the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he served as the first Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and later as rector. Beyond his academic duties, he participated in the Jewish National Council and the Jewish Assembly of Representatives, maintaining an active role in the Mizrachi religious movement.

Final Years and Recognition

Fraenkel continued his mathematical research and teaching throughout his residency in Jerusalem. In 1956, he received the Israel Prize for exact sciences, followed by the Rothschild Prize in 1962. After retiring from his position at the Hebrew University, he joined the faculty of Bar-Ilan University in 1957. He died in 1965 and was buried at Har HaMenuchot.
