Early Military Involvement
Joining rebel forces in his teenage years, Abiy participated in the struggle against the regime of Mengistu Haile Mariam. In 2006, Abiy helped co-found the Information Network Security Agency, an organization tasked with intelligence analysis and domestic surveillance. His work within this agency facilitated his movement into broader political spheres. By 2010, he secured a position as an elected member of the House of People's Representatives of Ethiopia, representing the Agaro district.
Premiership and Reform
Upon his appointment as Prime Minister, he initiated significant legislative changes, including the release of political prisoners and the removal of bans on various opposition groups. He led the formation of the Prosperity Party in 2019, which replaced the previous governing coalition. His economic platform focused on the privatization of state-owned entities such as Ethiopian Airlines.
Regional Conflict and Humanitarian Impact
Beginning in 2020, Ethiopia experienced the two-year Tigray War, involving federal forces against the Tigray People's Liberation Front and other regional actors. The conflict led to severe humanitarian crises and widespread displacement. Following the 2022 Pretoria Agreement, further military tensions emerged in the Amhara region as the federal government sought to consolidate regional militias.
