Early Development and Education
Born in 1878 within the Albu Rural Municipality, Tammsaare originated from a farming background. His family prioritized literacy, facilitating his attendance at the Hugo Treffner Gymnasium and the Imperial University of Dorpat, where he focused on law. His formal academic path halted in 1911 due to tuberculosis. During the subsequent years of recovery in Sochi and on a family farm in Koitjärve, he engaged extensively with the works of Cervantes, Shakespeare, and Homer.

Tammsaare’s writing career shifted through distinct stages. His initial output favored rural poetic realism, followed by urban novels and miniatures published between 1908 and 1919. Influenced by thinkers such as Jung, Freud, and Bergson, his thematic focus remained fixed on individual suffering and human interaction with the land, God, and the state. He maintained a deep interest in Russian realists, noting a profound connection to the works of Dostoevsky.
Career in Tallinn and Later Works
Following Estonia's achievement of independence in 1918, Tammsaare relocated to Tallinn. This period proved prolific, resulting in significant prose works that analyzed the history of the Estonian people. His later career produced notable titles such as I Loved a German and his final novel, Devil with a False Passport. He worked throughout his life as a writer, translator, and playwright before his death in 1940.
