🇸🇬 Yihan Yang

Bath, 2024: 32 points and 14th in the world

The 2024 International Mathematical Olympiad was held in Bath, in the United Kingdom, and the official individual results list 609 contestants. Yang appears under Singapore with a total of 32 points out of 42, a rank of 14 and a gold medal.

Fourteenth is a placing few olympiad careers ever reach. The table also records the six individual problem marks behind that total, the only granular account of the performance that has been published. Everything else about the day - the room, the timings, the problems Yang chose to attack first - is absent from the record and stays absent here.

Shanghai, 2026: a better score, a lower rank

Two years later the olympiad moved to Shanghai for its 67th edition, with 666 contestants on the official list. Yang's total rose to 35 points, a three-point improvement, and gold followed again. The rank, however, was 17th rather than 14th.

There is no contradiction in that. A rank at the IMO measures a contestant against a particular room on a particular pair of mornings. An easier problem set lifts everyone's totals, so a higher score can still buy a lower place.

How the olympiad is marked

Each contestant is given six problems across the competition, listed P1 to P6 in the results tables, and each problem is marked out of seven. The theoretical maximum is 42, and the official results for 2026 show several contestants reaching it.

Medals appear in an award column beside the totals, and contestants with identical scores share a rank, which is why joint placings run through the tables. Both of Yang's results carry the letter G for gold. The tables are published by the olympiad itself rather than by a national federation, which makes them the primary document in any dispute about who scored what.

What is documented - and what is not

Everything above comes from two pages published by the olympiad itself. Those pages give a name, a country, six problem scores, a total, a rank and a medal, and nothing else. No birth year, age, school, photograph or quotation is attached to the entry.

No Wikipedia article on Yihan Yang was found, and none of the sources used here records a gender, a hometown or a family name beyond the competitor's own. The gaps are left open rather than filled, because inventing biography around a young competitor's scoreboard line is the one error this site will not make.

Singapore and the shape of the field

The IMO's results are grouped by country, each contestant carrying a national code, which is how a single competitor can be tracked across editions. Yang's two entries are both Singaporean, two years apart, which means two national selections rather than one lucky summer.

The field has grown steadily across the editions consulted here: 609 contestants in 2024, 630 in Australia in 2025 and 666 in Shanghai in 2026. Against that expansion, staying inside the top 20 twice is a stiffer test than the raw scores suggest, because each new olympiad brings a fresh cohort and a fresh set of unseen problems.

Questions people ask about Yihan Yang

What is Yihan Yang known for?

Winning gold at the International Mathematical Olympiad for Singapore in both 2024 and 2026.

How old is Yihan Yang?

No source used here gives an age or birth year. The IMO's results tables do not record dates of birth.

What were Yihan Yang's IMO scores?

32 points out of 42 in Bath in 2024, for 14th place, and 35 points in Shanghai in 2026, for 17th. Both were gold-medal results.

Why was the rank lower in 2026 when the score was higher?

Because rank depends on the rest of the field. When a problem set is more tractable, totals rise across the board and a better score can still yield a lower placing.

Is Yihan Yang on Wikipedia?

No Wikipedia article was found. The documented record consists of the official IMO results pages.

How many contestants compete at the IMO?

The official results list 609 contestants in 2024, 630 in 2025 and 666 at the 67th olympiad in Shanghai in 2026.
