Four attempts, one title

CNN reported the 1996 result under a headline that told the whole story: a girl had won the national spelling bee on her fourth try. The winning word, vivisepulture, means the act or practice of burying alive.

Her first national appearance came at nine, when she finished fourth, which is an extraordinary placing for a competitor that young and a reminder that the bee is won by accumulation. The Sun Sentinel had been covering her progress since at least June 1994, when she was one of the Florida spellers in the field.

A family in the same competition

Guey was from West Palm Beach, and she was not the only speller in the house. In 1995 she and her sister Emily became the first siblings to reach the same national finals, and TIME later recorded that the sisters, older and younger, would quiz each other on words as they grew up.

The family were educators, which fits the pattern the bee's history repeats: champions tend to emerge from households where the study is shared, structured and taken seriously over years rather than crammed in a season.

The sibling record is a piece of bee history in itself. Reaching the national finals means winning a regional contest against every school in a defined territory, so two children from one household arriving in the same year means one family beat two separate fields.

Harvard, banking, and a classroom

Her adult career took a turn that few spelling champions' do. She took a degree in economics at Harvard and went to work in banking, then left it, returning to Harvard for a master's in school leadership at its graduate school of education.

By 2016, when TIME tracked down past winners, she was teaching mathematics part-time to eighth graders at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Berkeley, California. The Palm Beach Post had reported the move in June 2012 under a headline asking where Wendy was: the only Palm Beach County student to win the national bee had become a mother and a teacher in Boston.

Where Wendy Guey is now

The most recent account used here is TIME's, from May 2016, placing her in a Berkeley classroom. Nothing later is documented in this record, and her current position is not stated.

Her name also appears in coverage as Wendy Guey Lai and Wendy Lai. This page uses the name under which she won.

The Palm Beach Post placed her in Boston in 2012 and TIME in Berkeley in 2016, which is the sort of discrepancy ordinary life produces: four years and a move across the country. This page reports both, with their dates.

What happens to spelling champions

The bee produces a peculiar kind of fame: total for a week, then gone, attached to a person who is twelve or thirteen and has decades of ordinary life ahead. TIME's 2016 survey of past winners exists precisely because readers keep asking what became of them.

The answers in that piece are conspicuously undramatic, and Guey's is characteristic: a strong degree, a conventional career, a change of direction, and a job that has nothing to do with spelling. The competition is a childhood achievement rather than a career path, which is the most useful thing to know about it.
